What Are the Signs of Laylatul Qadar?

Laylatul Qadar, also known as The Night of Decree or The Night of Power, is one of the holiest nights in Islam. It is the night when the Qur’an was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ through Angel Jibreel (Gabriel). Allah describes this night as “better than a thousand months” (Surah Al-Qadr 97:3), meaning that worship and good deeds performed on this night carry rewards greater than 83 years of devotion.

While the exact date of Laylatul Qadar is hidden, it is believed to fall on one of the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan — the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, or 29th night. The wisdom behind keeping it hidden is to encourage believers to seek it through extra prayers, reflection, and good deeds.

Spiritual Signs of Laylatul Qadar

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions described certain signs and peaceful feelings that indicate Laylatul Qadar. Though not guaranteed, these signs often accompany the night, reminding believers of its divine blessings.

A Peaceful and Calm Night
The night of Laylatul Qadar is described as serene and tranquil. The weather is neither too hot nor too cold, and the atmosphere feels spiritually calm. As mentioned in Surah Al-Qadr (97:5):
“Peace it is until the emergence of dawn.”
Many Muslims report a feeling of inner peace and closeness to Allah on this night.

Soft, Gentle Light
Some narrations mention that the night is illuminated, though not by the sun or moon. The sky may appear unusually bright, even in the absence of artificial light.

No Shooting Stars
According to some scholars, on Laylatul Qadar, the sky is free of meteors or shooting stars — a sign of tranquility in the heavens.

The Sun Rises Without Sharp Rays
One of the most well-known signs is observed after the night ends. The next morning, the sun rises soft and white, without strong beams of light. The Prophet ﷺ said,
“The sun rises that morning without sharp rays, as if it were a brass dish.” (Sahih Muslim)

A Deep Feeling of Faith and Contentment
Believers often feel a powerful sense of faith (iman), inner peace, and tears in their prayers. This emotional connection is one of the strongest signs that one may have experienced Laylatul Qadar.

How to Seek Laylatul Qadar

The Prophet ﷺ advised:
“Seek Laylatul Qadar in the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan.” (Bukhari)

During these nights, increase your Qur’an recitation, dua, dhikr, and Tahajjud prayers. One of the most recommended supplications is:

“Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa’fu ‘anni.”
(O Allah, You are Most Forgiving, and You love forgiveness; so forgive me.)

Final Thoughts

Laylatul Qadar is a night of mercy, forgiveness, and divine blessings. Though its exact time is hidden, the believer who sincerely seeks it with devotion and humility will, by Allah’s mercy, find its reward written in their destiny.
